4160 MOVEMENT

Unequalled, like every Rolex before it, the Yacht-Master II is a product of legendary crafstmanship. At its core lies the 4160 movement, the result of 35,000 development hours and 360 individual components. Technically brilliant, on or off the water, its signature complication is a programmable countdown with mechanical memory. With a column wheel that extends through the main plate, both sides of the movement are connected. This ingenious design enables the perfect synchronisation between the different elements of the countdown. The result? Racers can now set their watch to the exact regatta starting sequences.

THE TRIPLOCK
WINDING CROWN

To protect the movement from water and dust, Rolex invented the Oyster case in 1926. And then, in 1953 created and patented the Twinlock winding crown to ensure further protection for professional divers. Rolex increased guarantee of waterproofness for the diving watches by introducing the Triplock winding crown in 1970. The Triplock consists of 10 different elements crafted from the most reliable materials. Once assembled, it screws down onto the Oyster case as tightly and securely as a submarine hatch.

THE RING COMMAND BEZEL

Rolex achieved perfection when it turned its attention to redefining the purpose and functionnality of the bezel. Typically, a bezel operates independently from the internal mechanism; however, the Ring Command bezel in the Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph operates in conjunction with it. A mechanical component that is linked to the movement, the bezel literally acts as the key to the programmable countdown, allowing it to be set and synchronised to the sequence of race start times. Complex in design, but simple in use, it is functionally beautiful.

In speaking of the new Corum Admiral’s Cup Deep Hull 48, my watch friend TLex (OceanicTime) says “Forget the Bubble Diver, now CORUM are in the business of making professional dive watches.” Can’t say I disagree with him. Not only delivering high performance pieces, but Corum is delivering pieces that look good (check out their best recent releases here). This new Corum Admiral’s Cup Chronograph 44 Centro Mono-pusher continues the streak with this cool mono-pusher chronograph. While not necessarily a hard-core dive watch, the design is solid and the mono-pusher functionality is not something you see every day. Also I like the “Geneva striped” inner dial. How about you? “What a cool looking watch.” That’s what I first thought of this new Omega Speedy. I mean, wow — what an upgrade for the iconic Omega model. With thoroughbred heritage and all the right little design touches, this new Omega Speedmaster Broad Arrow gets two big thumbs up from me! Let me count the ways I like this watch: 1) the black, Geneva-striped dial (it comes in silver, too), 2) the red-tipped chronograph counters and seconds hand, and last but certainly not least 3) the honeycombed chronograph subdials. On top of all this it is powered by an Omega Co-Axial Caliber 3313 movement. And I like that Omega priced it proudly — price is near $6,000 on the gator strap, add $100 for the bracelet version.

Just got word of a couple cool new Linde Werdelin watches. These special edition 3-Timer Racing series are based on LW’s 3-Timer GMT watch and will be sold at haute horlgerie retailer E’collezione in Singapore as well as at LindeWerdelin.com. Price is SGD10,800 at E’collezione and €5,280 on the website. Limited to just 9 in each color and offered in one of the most avid watch collecting markets in the world (Singapore), I don’t think these will last long so LW fans you better get on it!

It is no coincidence that these racing-inspired models come just in time for the always popular Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, Formula 1’s famous night race which will take place September 24-26, 2010.

More broadly, I’m excited about these watches because my guess is that this will be just the first of several new “Racing Series” watches we see from Linde Werdelin…stay tuned!

The reason for this watch seems to be that, after five successful years in the market, Panerai wants to show that it respects and understands the Chinese culture. Or something like that. I fail to see the connection, but it is entirely possible that I in fact do not understand the Chinese culture like Panerai does.
Further adding to the oddity of the release is its price and its production. 1,500 pieces will be made — a pretty good size run for a LE – and priced at 29,900 Renminbi, or about $4,400. In other words, relatively high production / relatively low price. What?!?
To me, this watch unfortunately comes off as an over-eager kowtow to China.

As time goes by, the meaning of Fu is further extended and expanded; yet, the posting tradition persists as the term never ceases to implicate being blessed and protected and having good fortune. Officine Panerai has therefore infused the character into the dial to create a perfect fusion of Chinese tradition elements and Italian classic design. It is also the wish of the brand that every wearer will receive this valuable blessing and be grateful.

Yawn?

Like the Zenith Elite Ultra Thin 681 that I showed you back in March, these new Zenith “Captain” watches are the latest offering in Zenith’s Elite collection. As you can see the watches are, well, plain. The $3,000-$4,000 price tag is not out of line for a watch with an in-house movement (as is the case here), but I’m just not feeling the love for this watch at such a price. Perhaps there is a subtle sophistication that I am missing. Or not. Feel free to weigh-in with a comment.

If I were going to buy a Zenith, I’d much prefer something like the Zenith El-Primero Striking 1/10 Chronograph. Granted, the Striking 1/10 is at least 2x-3x the price of the Elite Captain, but I find it many times more interesting than the watch shown here.

The Omega Seamaster, released in 1948 by Omega Watch, has been always attracting and elegant. And the line has a new collection— the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean. And I’d talk about the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean #2201.50.00.

This COSC certified chronometer can survive and work well in a depth up to 600 meters(2000 feet), so it’s very suitable for a diving lover. As the Rolex Submariner, this Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean has a bezel that can only rotate unidirectionally(means the bezel can only turn in one direction). This is particularly useful for divers who cannot accidentally rotate it in the wrong direction, which could cause them to miscalculate their dive times. A rotating bezel makes it easy to measure elapsed time.

The new Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Quantum Of Solace Limited Edition, released in conjuction with the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace, was a new Omega Seamaster. This new Seamaster is available in a limited number of 5,007 pieces. Perfectly matching the traits of the most famous spy, this Seamaster has several specific technical features and design details.

The bezel and the hands are distinctively different. The Planet Oceans bezel is slightly bit smaller than the case. This gives the Planet Ocean a sleeker appearance and more distinctive appearance.
The polished and brushed stainless steel case of the Omega watch measures 45.50 mm in diameter. The case construction incorporates a stainless steel

unidirectional bezel with a black aluminum ring, as well as a stainless steel screw-in crown. The helium escape valve is found at 10 o’clock. The curved scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is provided with inside anti-reflective treatment.

MB&F HM4 Thunderbolt Watch Hands-On

Here it is people, the latest and greatest watch from MB&F. Hands-on and in the flesh with the Horological Machine Number 4 - the Thunderbolt. What a kick-ass little machine it is. Well 'little' in the scheme of things only, it isn't exactly shy on the wrist. But that is OK, I like my statements bold, and this watch certainly is lays on the cool thick. Unlike other MB&F watches, the aviation themed HM4 is more steampunk in feel than their other watches. Not that it is steampunk in theme, but it has that look with the two large gauges and "pods." Made out of titanium the watch is pretty light for what it is. This much steel would weigh a lot more. Wearing wise, it is actually very comfortable. I could easily wear this watch all day long - just don't forget to be careful. When wearing a watch of this caliber, you don't want to be failing your arms all over the place.

Max Busser, founder of MB&F, remarks that the HM4 is the most legible MB&F watch yet. He is actually quite right. It is the only Horological machine with a traditional looking dial. Round and clear, it is quite easy to read with its Arabic numerals and luminant covered hands, especially given its orientation on the wrist. I actually love reading this watch. Right next to the time is the pod with the power reserve indicator for the movement. In order to make winding super smooth, MB&F added an extra gear to the train. While winding is much smoother, you do need to spend more time winding the watch to keep it wound. Which is actually not terrible given that people who wear manually wound watches tend to like to nervously fidget with the crown and winding it regularly. The watch has two crowns, one behind each pod. the crown behind the power reserve indicator pod is for winding, while the other crown is for adjusting the time. Reading the time is thankfully a breeze, as is operating the movement.

While most watch cases feel like more cohesive chunks of metal, the MH4 is a more open, skeletal design. A major function of the case is to provide a view into the movement. Aside from the transparent sapphire crystals on the case, MB&F designed the watch to have movement views from all angles. You can't help but immediately notice the large sapphire crystal piece in the middle of the pods section. This large section of sapphire is extremely tough to make, and costs more than many types of in-house made mechanical movements cost to manufacture. There is one supplier in the world that MB&F goes to to get this exotic cuts of sapphire crystal. It might be a pain in the ass for them, but the results speak for themselves. I think this trend should be carried over to cars - such that they have transparent hoods over the engine.
The HM4 engine doesn't have a tourbillon, but you can see the escapement wheel moving through a sapphire window on the top of the watch - which creates a great sense of perpetual motion. It is an amazing apparatus the HM4. Not only does it work really well, but you get this wonderful feeling of membership into a special club of exclusive watch enthusiasts just by putting the watch on.
The aviator inspired calfskin leather strap is black and custom made for the MB&F. It really does complete the theme of the watch which starts with A-10 airplanes. The finish on the case is a combo of polished and satin finished sections. You can tell that the polishing was very difficult. MB&F informed me that their case finishers laughed at them when they said they wanted satin finish on the case. It has to do with the tiny spaces that need to be polished and the size of the satin finishing brush. Somehow there were able to get it done, and I have a feeling they will continue to perfect the process. It is nice to know that this watch isn't just some limited edition - but rather a new permanent part of the MB&F timepiece family. Though the brand will only make about 2 of them a month. The waiting list for one is already many, many months long, even with its price tag of $158,000. Even at that entry-level Ferrari cost, knowing the competition, the HM4 Thunderbolt seems like a good deal.

While my ability to afford this or any other MB&F watch may never come to fruition, I'm totally sold on the concept. MB&F appreciation is turning into a lifestyle, along with a mere love of their products. There is already the concept of the "MB&F man" (being one who trusts his own tastes enough to not request approval from others), and most all other avant garde luxury watches are immediately compared to what MB&F has cooked. Does MB&F really care that they are set as some high-bar for weird mechanical watches? Not particularly - though they are flattered by the title and position. Max Busser (and friends) will continue to develop cool watches that they want to see being made. It just so happens their taste is a bit infectious.
